5 Great Games Coming Out This Month: October 2019
October, the time of candy and scaring the pants off of yourself and your friends with some creepy games. While the horror genre seems like the obvious choice for the scariest month of the year, some may not want to experience sheer terror — weird, right? Fear not (pun completely intended), for October 2019 sets to bring games for every kind of player! Now sit back and relax as we run down five of the many great games releasing this 2019.
1. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair
Just like how the original Yooka-Laylee was meant to act as a spiritual successor to the 3D platformer Banjo-Kazooie, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair sets to replicate the fun side-scrolling 2D platforming of the Donkey Kong Country series. Taking place right after the first game, the dynamic duo must take on Capital B and his impossible lair while rescuing the Royal Beettalion along the way.
Players can challenge the final level at any time but may find it difficult without going through some of the diverse 2D levels. Along with that, the game contains a hub world with various puzzles and goals that unlock more levels for your enjoyment. Platform your way to the top when Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair releases for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on October 8th.
2. Little Town Hero
From the creators of Pokémon comes something that’s… not Pokémon? Yes, to everyone’s surprise, developer Game Freak brings a completely new IP unrelated to its core franchise. While the company has created independent titles in the past, none have gained quite as much attention as Little Town Hero. Formally known as Town, the game takes place in a small village at the edge of the world. Here, people are not allowed to leave, as the only entrance is guarded by a large castle. Most of the villagers don’t mind and live happily, unlike the protagonist, who dreams of the outside world. One day, monsters begin to appear from the outside, and it’s up to the main character to stop them.
While the game contains classic RPG elements, one interesting feature is that grinding doesn’t really exist. Instead, players will need to use strategy to defeat enemies. While we don’t exactly know what this could mean, it does have us intrigued. Discover the secrets of this town when Little Town Hero released for the Nintendo Switch on October 16th.
3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Few shooter franchises can compare to the Call of Duty series, and few Call of Duty games can live up to the calibre of the Modern Warfare sub-series. It’s because of this that developer Infinity Ward has decided to reboot the original entry with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. This newest title will bring everything great from other ModernWarfare games and re-imagine it into a modern setting and era. Players will have to make questionable and on-the-fly decisions that truly blur the lines of what it means to be at war.
The game features a completely new campaign, complete with new characters and reinvented ones such as Captain Price. According to Infinity Ward, the narrative will span across all modes, including multiplayer and co-op. That means your best bet to experiencing the full story is to play as much of the game as possible. Plus, there’s crossplay — a first for the series and always a welcomed feature. Go to war when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare releases on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 25th.
4. The Outer Worlds
The Outer Words is an expansive RPG with similarities to Fallout: New Vegas. Here, players will get to explore the edge of the galaxy while making decisions and choices that will alter the course of the game. You play as a customized character that awakens from cryogenic sleep decades longer than expected and get caught within a conspiracy that threatens to destroy the colony of Halcyon.
Much of The Outer Worlds’ gameplay revolves around player choice. Will you try to save the colonies and act for the good of the people, or will you just destroy everything in sight? These decisions shape the story and its outcome. Along with this, you will recruit different characters along the way, who come with their own set of companion missions. You can choose to keep your companions, or simply kill them off, but they can also choose to leave if they don’t agree with your choices. This brings even more complexity to how one can approach the game. Choose your fate at the edge of the galaxy when The Outer Worlds releases for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 25th, and on the Nintendo Switch at a later date.
5. Luigi’s Mansion 3
Perhaps the most fitting release for October, Luigi’s Mansion 3 brings the wonderful puzzle-solving, exploratory gameplay of the series and incorporates it with modern graphics and beautiful level design. This time, the green plumber and the rest of the Mario crew are invited to a lovely vacation in an extravagant hotel, but not everything is as it seems. With all of his friends suddenly missing, it’s up to Luigi and his new Poltergust G-00 to traverse all of the Hotel’s floors and rescue them from a ghostly demise.
This third instalment brings plenty to the table to let it stand out from previous entries. Each floor of the hotel is designed around a different theme, allowing for diverse puzzles and obstacles that don’t feel repetitive. The inclusion of different modes such as the ScareScraper and the ScreamPark also provide fun multiplayer alternatives to the main story. Finally, what is likely the most well-known feature of this game, players can choose to play co-op during the core adventure, with one controlling Luigi and the other controlling the slimier Gooigi. Each has their own set of abilities that will aid throughout the various levels, so working together should become a priority.
